Ave Maria

ABC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter members gathered for a tour of Ave Maria University and Town. Southwest Florida experienced a dual debut this summer: Ave Maria opened its doors as the first Catholic university to be founded in the United States in 40 years, and Ave Maria became the first modern town ever developed in conjunction with a university. Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza and chairman of the Ave Maria Foundation, sought to build a school in a growing region of the Southeastern United States. What evolved from the partnership is a 750-acre Catholic university with Frank Lloyd Wright-style buildings and a 4,000-acre town that balances commercial, residential and environmental needs. Suffolk Construction Company and Kraft Construction, Naples, Fla., teamed up to provide preconstruction services and, with an initial investment of more than $250 million, the project broke ground in February 2006.
